Keetham Lake in Sikandra

The scenic Keetham Lake is among the most beautiful lakes situated just outside the city of Agra near Sikandra at the main Agra-Delhi highway at NH 2. This Lake is famous as Sur Sarovar Lake also. It is a calm, tranquil spot that is best suited for a pleasant, relaxed one day outing. The variety of water-birds and fishes that are found in and near this lake adds to its natural beauty and charm.

Sikandra Keetham Lake

Keetham Lake is around 12 km from Sikandra and 20 km from Agra and is situated within the premises of Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. It is linked through Railway track of Railway Station at Keetham. It was announced a National Bird Sanctuary on March 27th 1991 by Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh. The revering waters of River Yamuna circumscribe the whole Sur-Sarovar sanctuary area and the lake is fed with the waters of Yamuna River. The tank level when the lake is fully filled is 24 feet.

The climatic conditions of the lake area same as typical climatic conditions of Uttar Pradesh plains having very hot windy summers and extremely cold winters. The average temperature here ranges from 1.5 degree Celsius in winters to 49 degree Celsius in summers. July, August and September are the months of monsoon when heavy rains occur.

The overall catchment area of Keetham Lake is 7.13 sq km. It is spread in pentagonal shape and there are artificial islands that work as shelter as well as provide breeding grounds for the birds that migrates here from various places of the world. These islands also maintain the ecological balance of the Lake. One positive point is that it is located on the way from Agra to Delhi and tourist can easily visit or stop here during their journey towards Agra.

The required raw water for Keetham Lake is provided by Agra Canal that originates in Delhi from Okhla barrage of River Yamuna. The Agra Canal water is diverted at Delhi Agra road using channel of Jodhpur branch which is near Anand Engineering College at Delhi Agra road which is located about 2 km from Keetham Lake. Keetham Lake is also used as raw water intake to be used at Mathura Refinery Water Treatment Plant located in near vicinity of Keetham Lake.

The UP government’s Forest Department has created small woodlands and developed shallow, less deep areas near lake to create natural habitat for birds to be used as their nesting sites.

There are many species of birds that stay on or near Keetham lake. Around 106 different species of birds including both resident as well as migratory birds come at Keetham Lake, using it as their resting habitat as well as a place for breeding. In the summers, whole area gets sprawled with the dense growth of vegetation of macrophytic nature, specially Potamogeton and Eichornia or water hyacinth. During winters also there is lots of avifauna that reside here in the lake as the quality of water is such that it supports all flora and fauna in both summer and winter seasons. Main aquatic birds that inhibit the lake are: Grey Heron, Paddy Bird, Purple Heron, Darter, small, large and larger Egrets, Little Gerbs, Common Teal, Pintail, Shovelor, Comb Duck etc, to name a few.

Government of Uttar Pradesh has taken several initiatives to beautify and renovate this lake. As a result, this lake has become one of the most visited lakes in Agra as well as whole Uttar Pradesh. There are many peripheral lakes near the main lake that provides open shelter for migratory birds.

How to Reach Keetham Lake in Sikandra


The Keetham Lake is around 24.5 km from the Agra city and it takes around 35 minutes to reach here. For that one should head northwest from Agra Cantonment railway station and then turn left onto Fatehpur Sikri road. Drive for 1.0 km, passing Torrent Power Sub-Station on the left. Continue towards Bodla Road for another 1.7 km, then from Vardan Maternity and Nursing Home, continue towards M.G. Road 2, drive for another 3 km while passing Megamits Software Development Society on the left side. Next, continue on the Pandit Radharaman Road, passing through Arcadia on the left. After 1.3 km, turn left at Prachin Shiv Mandir on NH 2 and drive continuously for 14. 7 km, meanwhile passing Vyom premium fuels on the left side. Take a U-turn, drive for 2.1 km, then turn left, drive 100 meters, then turn right, small turn at left and approach Keetham Lake.
